National American University was originally founded Rapid City, SD in 1941 as secretarial school. The name then was National College of Business and the school was located in a single building in downtown Rapid City. In 1960 a new building was constructed and that structure now houses the administration offices for the school.

NAU added several new campuses in the Midwest in the 1970s. Additional expansion occurred in the 1990s with more locations added and the school continues to expand nationwide. 

National American University offers degree and diploma programs in a variety of disciplines including business, technology and health care. The school also offers a comprehensive and constantly expanding roster of online courses and degree programs.

About the Massage Therapy Program

The program of study and training for therapeutic massage at National American University combines classroom presentation and hands-on learning experiences. In order to successfully complete the massage therapy program students will need to demonstrate their proficiency in the various massage techniques. Additional required professional courses must also be completed with a “C” average.

Goals for students that are training to become massage therapists at NAU will be to prepare them to sit for the National Certification Exam for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. Students will be provided with the essential knowledge and skills that will integrate the variety of therapeutic options necessary to work with specific populations. Students will also have a variety of massage therapy internships from which to select so that they can gain first hand, real world experience in applying their massage skills.

Graduates of the therapeutic massage therapy program will have been trained to prepare an appropriate massage therapy session and to combine the range of techniques and therapeutic options to meet the needs of each client. These students will also have received the proper training to prepare them to develop and successfully manage their own massage business if that is their goal.  

Successful completion of the program requires 98 credits with coursework that includes fundamentals of massage therapy, medical terminology, clinical kinesiology, neuromuscular techniques, essentials of anatomy and physiology, interpersonal professional communications and mastering therapeutic business.

Financial Aid

Bloomington is a major suburb in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. It is the fifth largest city in Minnesota located just 10 miles from downtown Minneapolis.

Bloomington was home for the Minnesota Vikings of the NFL and the Minnesota Twins of MLB for more than 20 years. But in 1982 both teams were moved to the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in downtown Minneapolis. As a result, the old stadium site was purchased by local authorities and plans were developed for the Mall of America. The mall opened in 1992 and is the largest indoor mall in the U.S. The mall employs 13,000 people. In 2006 the Water Park of America was opened and plans are in place for Phase II of the Mall of America.

The city of Bloomington has over 90,000 residents. The hospitality industry provides the most jobs in the area employing over 20,000. Other employers include Thermo King, the Toro Company, Seagate Technology and ADC Telecommunications.  

Local authorities have made a commitment to the overall livability of Bloomington and over 1/3 of the city has been reserved as park land or for recreational activities. There are numerous softball fields, tennis courts and golf courses for plenty of outdoor activity options.
