The Milan Institute of Cosmetology offers career training for work in a spa setting. Locations can be found throughout California, Idaho, and Texas, and the school continues to expect to grow in other states, as well. In all locations, the school reaches out to make connections with area businesses to learn what they expect from recent graduates. In this way, each educational program is tailored to career placement and industry standards.
The Milan Institute’s mission is “to meet the needs of students and employers by offering quality educational programs that prepare graduates for employment in cosmetology and related fields with solid growth potential.” Many students choose to combine their massage training with coursework in cosmetology and spa services in order to maximize their appeal to employers.
In addition to massage therapy, students can choose between cosmetology, aesthetician, facialist, dental assisting, and medical assisting programs. In all cases, students can expect to complete an internship/externship prior to graduation.
The Massage Therapy program prepares students for entry-level massage work. The modalities covered include Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, therapeutic massage, sports massage, Shiatsu, reflexology, and pregnancy massage. Students go beyond these steps to learn many spa-related techniques, as well, including therapeutic stone massage, aromatherapy, and hydration treatments. General business courses round out the program, helping students to succeed in the industry at the more practical level.
At the Milan Institute, all instructors are chosen for their professional experience. Most of the faculty members have spent time running their own massage facilities or working in a real-world capacity, and can bring that experience to the classroom every day. Class sizes are small to maximize the amount of student-teacher interaction, and out of classroom hours help those who need a little more study time.
There are seven different Milan Institute campuses in California. The facilities at the Fairfield location are in keeping with the standards set out by the school, and provide both a classroom learning environment and up-to-date massage facilities that students can expect to be similar to those found on the job. The Student Salon/Spa offers 50- and 80-minute sessions to the public. This provides a great, hands-on learning opportunity for students, since they are given a chance to work with real clients in a real-world setting.
All Milan Institute of Cosmetology campuses have their own accreditation and approvals. At the Fairfield campus, the accrediting body is the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences (NACCAS). The NACCAS is an independent organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, and is used primarily to determine whether or not beauty schools maintain educational standards.
Financial aid is available to students who qualify. Most students rely on a combination of federal funding sources (determined by filling out and submitting the required FAFSA forms), private loans, and pay-as-you-go options. Limited funds through the school apply, so students are encouraged to contact the financial aid department for more information before they go through the admissions process.
