Brandon is essentially a bedroom community of Tampa…a rather large bedroom community. The Brandon community has an identity all is own with a community hospital, a cultural center but does not have its own postal code.
The area was settled by the Brandon family in the late 19th century. The area grew from a family settlement to a town slowly. Gradually various facilities were added to accommodate growth but the town never held more than a few hundred citizens until the 1950s. That’s when things took off for Brandon. Schools were added, a Chamber of Commerce was formed and the roads to Tampa were improved.
As access to Tampa became easier, more commuters settled in Brandon and the areas suburban profile began to develop. I-75 came through in 1986 and the population in the area skyrocketed to 100,000. While the official census pegs the population at around 78,000, it is estimated that the population around Brandon may now be close to 250,000.
