It was originally a popular destination for New Yorkers and others from the Northeast seeking to retire in a warm climate. As the population shifted to the western part of the county Lauderdale Lakes’ primary residents became African American and Caribbean.
Lauderdale Lakes is a short drive from Fort Lauderdale. Known as the “Venice of America,” Fort Lauderdale has a quite extensive canal system and is a major center for yachting. The city features over 100 boatyards and marinas and more than 40,000 yachts. Fort Lauderdale is a major tourist destination and hosts more than 10 million visitors annually.
Also nearby is Pompano Beach which is experiencing a serious construction boom.
