The Salter School in Tewksbury provides career-level training in the fields of massage therapy, medical assisting, and health claims specialist work. As part of the Premier Education Group line of schools, The Salter School is dedicated to the type of education that results in real-world experience and employment, and all in a setting that is both academic and skills-centered. The massage therapy program is a favorite among those who want to interact with clients and improve health and wellness at the front lines.
The Salter School got its start as the Salter Secretarial School, first opening its doors in Worcester, MA in 1937. Offering secretarial training to area women, the school was designed with vocational-level education right from the beginning. It operated out of a single building in the downtown city center for decades, finally moving to a larger location in 1981. With the move came a change in the name and additional coursework options, which included the then-burgeoning fields of technology and computers.
Premier Education Group (PEG) bought the school in 2002, bringing it together with a wide range of other career training centers in the Northeastern United States. Massage and other allied health fields were added around this time, as well. Today, PEG oversees such schools as Branford Hall Career Institute, Salter College, Seacoast Career Schools, Suburban Technical School, Harris School of Business, Hallmark Institute of Photography, and Salter School of Nursing. In all cases, the mission is similar: to “offer students a challenging, intensive program of study leading to satisfying business and professional careers.”

The massage therapy course at The Salter School can be completed in as little as 12 months when taken at a full-time workload. Throughout the program, students learn everything from the basics of human anatomy to practical business skills. And while these classroom-style courses are an integral part of the education here, the real focus is on hands-on skills development in a massage lab setting. Here, students learn specific modalities and techniques needed to gain entry-level employment in the field.
Different states have different requirements in place for massage licensure, and this program doesn’t meet the standards everywhere. Check with individual states before you sign on for the program.
Because the focus of The Salter School’s massage program is hands-on learning, instructors are chosen for their working experience and how well they can relay that experience to their students. Classes are small and generally contain the same group of students and instructors, so that a sense of community and camaraderie is developed throughout.
The Tewksbury campus of The Salter School provides training in three different healthcare fields: massage therapy, medical assisting, and health claims specialist. This is one of the newer The Salter School campuses, so most of the classrooms and labs still contain new, industry-standard equipment.
This particular campus is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS), an overseeing body that ensures vocational schools are in keeping with standards put out by the U.S. Department of Education.
The Salter School participates in Title IV Funding through the government grant and loan program, as well as various veteran departments. If you qualify for any of these funding options, you may have the option of taking out the required loans or grants to cover tuition and other costs. Other financial aid options include private payment plans and loans—all of which are subject to individual repayment terms. Tewksbury is a small town in Massachusetts located just 20 miles from Boston. Popular among families and commuters, it offers access to the city center with a touch of quieter, more upscale living. As is the case with much of this part of the United States, Tewksbury has a long and rich history. This history takes shape in the architecture and people, both of which offer a welcoming air.
