When I was growing up in the ’60s and ’70s it wasn’t unusual for a demonstration of some sort to take place on almost any college campus. Those years were the height of student activism. These days demonstrations seem relegated to elite schools, organized by radical fringe groups of some sort.
Apparently, the Boulder College of Massage Therapy has joined the ranks of the elite.
On September 20, the school will hold a “Massage for Peace” event in recognition of the United Nations International Peace Day scheduled for the following day. The school will plant a “Peace Pole” to make a statement of the community’s support for peace and harmony in the world.
To some the idea of making a public statement for peace may seem a bit dated and frivolous but I believe that it is consistent with the mission of massage therapists who seek to bring healing and wellness to others. One of the core benefits of massage is stress reduction which can result in inner peace. Couldn’t the world benefit from a bit of the same?
