Going to School in San Francisco
San Francisco has experienced many dramatic events and trends during its history. The Gold Rush of 1849 saw a surge in population and resulted in the city becoming a primary West Coast banking and financial center. The devestating earthquake of 1906 caused the destruction of most of the downtown area and killed 3,000. The opening of the Golden Gate Bridge and The Bay Bridge in the 1930’s made the city more accessible and the population grew dramatically during the 1940s and 1950s.
In the second half of the 20th century, San Francisco began to attract many of America’s counterculture groups including artists, writers, musicians and hippies. The city also became a center for the gay rights movement and the homosexual population increased dramatically. As a result, San Francisco has the highest percentage of gay men and lesbians of all U.S. cities.
During the 1980s and 90s the city underwent a period of rapid economic accompanied by a major construction boom. Many high-rise apartment buidings and skyscrapers were built during this period. The dot-com boom of the 1990s drew significant numbers of entrepreneurs, computer technicians, software developers and marketing professionals to the city, further altering the demographic mix of the city. Even though the boom went bust in 2001, housing costs have remained quite high and the city is still a hub for technology development.
San Francisco is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Bordered by both the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco Bay, the vista of the city can be breathtaking when viewed from certain perspectives. A variety of renowned landmarks and destinations like Alcatraz, Fisherman’s Wharf, the TransAmerica tower, the Golden Gate Bridge, Haight-Ashbury and Lombard Street draw visitors from every part of the world. There is no more diverse and interesting city in America in which to live and work.
