About Kaplan College
Kaplan College was created in 1937, when its parent company, Kaplan Inc., bought a business training school known as the American Institute of Commerce and changed it over to its new name. Kaplan Inc. owns and operates over 64 different schools around the United States, and it also offers a variety of online training programs. Kaplan College campuses can be found in Maryland, Ohio, Washington, Wisconsin, Arizona, Colorado, Indiana, and Nevada.
The school's vocational training courses are offered in the fields of business, computers, legal studies, and health care. The Merrillville, Indiana campus offers a number of degree options, including an Associate's Degree in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork, and a Certificate in Clinical Massage Therapy.
Graduates of all the programs may be eligible to sit for the relevant national and state certification exams, but the school does not guarantee eligibility or a passing score.
Clinical Massage Therapy (Certificate)
The Clinical Massage Therapy program offers a certificate of completion. Students are trained to work in private clinics, hospitals, medical offices, gyms, and spas. Courses include various types of massage, anatomy and physiology, pathology, and medical ethics. A hands-on program, this curriculum focuses on technical and practical skills that will enable the graduate to pursue a career in massage therapy.
Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (Associate of Applied Science)
An extension of the Clinical Massage program, the Associate of Applied Science in Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork program prepares graduates to seek employment in a myriad of health care settings. Coursework includes advanced holistic, clinical and technical skills, reflexology, acupuncture, trigger point therapy, and aromatherapy.
In addition, students will learn about and practice various body wraps, vichy shower treatments, hydrotherapy, and myofascial techniques. Graduates of this program are eligible for certification through the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCTMB).
Accreditation
As an educational institution, Kaplan College is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools. It does not have regional accreditation, so the transfer of credits to another educational institution outside of the Kaplan name may be difficult.
Faculty
All faculty members are chosen for their experience in the field. They are expected to share their knowledge of the "hows and whys" of working in a real medical office in order to give students a competitive edge in the job market. Class sizes are kept small to allow instructors to work directly with students to help accomplish these goals.

The town of Merrillville was once covered with dense woodlands. It occupies an area of approximately 33 square miles and has a population of about 31,000. Merrillville offers a great deal of diversity in housing, population and cultural experiences. There are a variety of business districts that present employment and economic support for the 31,000 residents and 12,000 individual households.
Estimates show that during the week the population of Merrillville swells to over 100,000 due to the influx of those that work and come to shop in Merrillville. The town is considered the center of the county mainly because the intersection of I-65 and Route 30 brings a tremendous amount of traffic through the area.
Merrillville is just a few miles south of Gary, Indiana. Gary is located on Lake Michigan and has seen its fortunes rise and fall with the activities in the steel industries. Most of the economic news for Gary has been negative though two casinos have opened along the lakefront.
Merrillville is about 30 miles from downtown Chicago providing relatively easy access to the metropolis and all of the amenities that one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country. Chicago is an economic, cultural, retail, educational, health care and transportation hub for the entire country.
The city is a cultural center, too. Symphony, opera, ballet, theater—you name it and you can find it in Chicago. There are several art museums, the Museum of Natural History, Shedd Aquarium and the Adler Planetarium. Improvisational comedy began in Chicago at Second City. Chicago was named the “Best Sports City in America” in 2006. The city hosts 15 professional sports teams including the Bears, Cubs, White Sox, Bulls, Blackhawks (hockey) and Fire (soccer).
