Bloomington is a major suburb in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. It was home for the Minnesota Vikings of the NFL and the Minnesota Twins of MLB for more than 20 years. But in 1982 both teams were moved to the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in downtown Minneapolis. As a result, the old stadium site was purchased by local authorities and plans were developed for the Mall of America. The mall opened in 1992 and is the largest indoor mall in the U.S. The mall employs 13,000 people. In 2006 the Water Park of America was opened and plans are in place for Phase II of the Mall of America.
Local authorities have made a commitment to the overall livability of Bloomington and over 1/3 of the city has been reserved as park land or for recreational activities. There are numerous softball fields, tennis courts and golf courses for plenty of outdoor activity options. The proximity of Bloomington to the Minneapolis-St. Paul area offers many additional options for entertainment and culture including professional and college sports, arts and theater, concerts, museums and many historical sites.
