Three distinct settlements formed in the St. Cloud territory: Upper, Middle, and Lower Town. Each had its own ethnicity and social classes, which caused a deep rift in the city as a whole. Slavery was a major issue of contention. Because of the harsh realities of pioneer life, the settlements came together for protection and strength and incorporated as a city in 1856.
The city grew, with manufacturing, hospitals, and schools forming the backbone of the economy. Now, St. Cloud thrives on small and large business, including granite, printing, and lens manufacturing.
In addition to the strong economy, St. Cloud also has an active social scene. Visitors and residents can experience theater, festivals, museums, art galleries, gardens, parks, zoos, and more.
