The Omaha School of Massage and Healthcare provides vocational-level training in several allied health career options. In addition to the massage program for which the school is named, students can opt for a diploma in medical assisting, medical billing and coding, or health information management. Located in Omaha, Nebraska, the school offers just one campus for all its educational options, though it is part of a larger chain of educational facilities run by Herzing University.
The mission at the Omaha School of Massage and Healthcare is to “consistently pursue academic excellence by exposing students to a well-balanced program that incorporates theory, physiology, anatomy, complimentary courses, and practical experiences that are pivotal to personal and professional growth.” It started as a privately run school in 1991, offering training to area students. It was purchased by Herzing University in June of 2008.
Herzing University is a for-profit chain of career training facilities that grants everything from diplomas up to master’s degrees in a range of vocational fields. It first opened its doors in 1965 as a computer training institute, but changed its business model just five years later by acquiring more schools. Students in the Herzing chain can learn business, technology, health care, design, and public safety.
There are two massage education options offered through the Omaha School of Massage and Healthcare: a diploma course and an Associate of Science course. Students in the diploma program can finish their entry-level massage training in as little as a year; the degree program can be completed in as little as 16 months, though many students take longer to finish all their general education courses.
In both programs, students begin by learning basic anatomy and physiology, massage theory, CPR, pathology, kinesiology, personal finance, customer service, and clinical studies. Specific modality options include sports massage, Swedish massage, hydrotherapy, reflexology, Reiki, hot stone massage, neuromuscular and deep tissue techniques, and Thai massage. Those in the degree program will also cover general courses in information literacy, English composition, speech, computer applications, mathematics, social sciences, and humanities.
Because the school is small, the number of instructors is fairly limited. Students learn the majority of their massage skills from one or two instructors, with separate faculty members for hydrotherapy and general education courses in math, English, and other subjects.
The Omaha School of Massage and Healthcare has been at its present location since 1995. In addition to a lab setting for clinical studies, students learn in a traditional classroom setup, spa rooms and a hydrotherapy room. An on-site student clinic rounds out the experience, and massage students are expected to complete 6 hours of massage per week until they reach the total of 180 hours required for graduation. Administrative offices, a research library, and a student lounge area are also found on campus.
Herzing University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member (but not accredited by) the North central Association. In order to be licensed as a massage practitioner in the state of Nebraska, 1000 clock hours of study are required, which means the Omaha School of Massage and Healthcare courses do not apply.
Financial aid in the form of federal and state loans is available through government programs. These require students to fill out the required FAFSA forms and be eligible for funding (as well as agree to the repayment terms). Students who wish to enter their careers debt-free can opt for the school’s extended payment play, which allows them to make a 10 percent down payment before the program starts, and to make regular monthly payments after that. Limited Herzing University scholarships are available to graduating high school students and members of the military.
As the largest city in Nebraska, Omaha has much to offer students and recent graduates. A large and vibrant population, a rich city history, and a strong economy that houses such commercial giants as Kellogg Company, ConAgra Foods, and Mutual of Omaha, there tends to be more in the way of job opportunities and disposable income than many other Midwestern locations. Many massage professionals choose to stay on in the area to work for the healthcare sector or as independent practitioners, though licensure is required to go very far in the field.
