The Academy of Massage Therapy (AMT) has been in operation since 1990. The focus here is intended to be on providing technical skills training in massage with additional development opportunities in general business and communication skills. Flexibility is also key, and students can opt between traditional day classes or evening options.
The school’s formal mission is “to provide comprehensive training in massage therapy in a supportive atmosphere, so that…graduates will gain the financial independence, professional status and self esteem that this career provides.” To this end, the programs are offered in keeping with state standards in massage, and qualified graduates may go on to sit for the National Certification Exam.
The Clinical Massage Therapy with Spa Therapies Certification Program is a year-long program designed to train students for entry-level positions. Coursework includes general health and human body classes (anatomy, physiology, pathology, neurology), clinical preparations and applications, CPR, massage techniques (standard options as well as foot reflexology, kinesiology, Shiatsu), and general practice management and professional development.
In addition to the standard massage training, the spa certification requires the students to take courses in spa history, theory, culture, types of spas, and general business practices.
Upon successful completion of this program, students should have met the required 1,000 hours to qualify to sit for the National Certification Exam in New Jersey and New York.
A shorter option is the Massage Therapy with Spa Therapies Certification Program, which lasts just 34 weeks in length. It focuses on Western massage therapy styles and spa techniques, rather than the more comprehensive course list offered via the Clinical Massage Therapy option. Because the course surpasses the 500 hour mark, students may be eligible to sit for the National Certification Exam in New Jersey (though not in more strict states with the 1,000 hour requirement).
An additional Spa Therapy Certification Program option exists for students and massage professionals who just want to build on their current education with the spa training component.
Massage instructors teach in an average student-to-teacher ratio of 12:1. This small class size is combined with an overall small school learning environment, which is intended to provide more hands-on and personalized instruction than students may receive elsewhere. The learning format is designed to appeal to different types of learners, with a focus on auditory, kinesthetic, and visual learners.
The AMT facilities include a student massage clinic, which provides hands-on training in a real-world setting. Students provide massages to the public for a reduced price in exchange for learning experiences. All classes and clinics are located at 321 Main Street in Hackensack, New Jersey 07601, which is within easy access of public transportation routes for those who are commuting to and from school.
AMT is accredited by the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation (COMTA) and a member of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) Council of Schools. Further approval as an education institution is granted by the New Jersey Department of Education, New Jersey Department of Labor, and New Jersey Department of Workforce Development. Continuing education credits are approved by the National Certification Board for Massage Therapy and Bodywork.
AMT is approved by the U.S. Department of Education to offer financial aid to those who qualify in keeping with the Title IV financial aid program. Students who demonstrate financial need and fill out the appropriate paperwork may be offered grants, loans, or other government-funded assistance programs. Repayment terms vary depending on the grant or loan type, and are the student’s responsibility.
