PTI has been offering Associate degrees and certifications since 1946. Since its start, the school’s focus has been on providing training in the top in-demand industries in Pennsylvania and the outlying areas. Most of the departments, accreditations, and facilities were added in the 1990s and 2000s, when PTI expanded to take over the former Boyd School.
Although Pittsburgh Technical Institute is a career training school, it has a very collegiate atmosphere. Students combine technical skills with general courses to get a well-rounded education that serves them well in the outlying community. Many courses are offered online, and both day and evening classes exist to help facilitate learning.

Students begin by learning the basic sciences of anatomy and physiology, and build from there to learn the how to provide physical comfort and relief from muscular pain. Coursework includes chair massage, spa techniques, deep tissue massage, reflexology, aromatherapy, sports massage, and Swedish massage. All students also take courses in business development and medical law and ethics, which helps to boost the chances of success in a self-employment and/or professional massage setting.
Instructors are hired for their experience, education, and commitment to students. They are encouraged to participate in community efforts and professional organizations to keep their ties to the working world strong, and also have a strong educational basis that translates to great student-teacher relationships.
The North Fayette Campus is located in Oakdale, just a few minutes outside downtown Pittsburgh. It has more than 180 acres, which provides a quiet and collegiate setting where students can focus on their studies. A new housing facility even allows for on-campus apartments that are open to students to rent. The large and spacious facilities include several student areas (including a bookstore, cafe, and pavilion) as well as updated classrooms and lecture halls. Massage students learn much of their trade in the Massage Lab, which features nine industry-standard massage tables and the type of materials and setting common in the working world.
PTI was the first two-year career school in Western PA to become accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. This regional accreditation means that the courses taken at PTI can be transferred to (and from) other universities and colleges of the same level.
Almost all students rely on some combination of grants, loans, and scholarships in order to pay for their education. All prospective students and their families are encouraged to sit with a PTI financial planner to determine the best course of action. Financial aid is only available to those who qualify.
Pittsburgh is one of the largest and most active metropolitan centers in the region. The 22nd largest urban area in the entire country, you’ll find everything from great sports and industrial centers to a vibrant downtown area and plenty of parks, zoos, and cultural venues like theater and ballet. One of the benefits of going to school at Pittsburgh Technical Institute is that the campus is located a short drive from the downtown center. Students can live on campus and enjoy Pittsburgh from a distance or live in the city and drive to work. And because the local economy is so dependent on the fields of healthcare, education, and technology, professional opportunities in massage therapy are fairly high.
