The school can trace its roots to 1879, when a man named John F. Draughon started the Practical Business College, which traveled from town to town in Tennessee and Kentucky training young people getting ready to enter the workforce. Draughon eventually settled permanently in Nashville, expanding his business school to reach over 38 locations during his lifetime. Throughout the next almost one hundred years, the school opened some facilities, closed others, and diversified to include secretarial and accounting courses.
Draughons Junior College changed its name the Daymar Institute in 2010. It is now officially established in three locations and offers a range of business and vocational courses designed to service the modern economy and job market.

Daymar Institute offers programs in the fields of business, computers, criminal justice, medical care, legal work, and personal fitness. Most of the programs offer a diploma upon completion, though there are a few Bachelor of Applied Science options, as well.
The massage therapy program is a diploma course that helps train students to become entry-level medical massage therapists. The curriculum includes both Eastern and Western techniques, with a focus on specific massage modalities. Students can expect to learn sports massage, prenatal massage, therapeutic massage, Swedish massage, hot stone therapy, and hydrotherapy. The techniques are offered on top of spa therapies, craniosacral massage, myoffascial release, Reiki, kinesiology, trigger point therapy, and reflexology.
Faculty members teach using a primarily hands-on approach that connects students with the human body from day one. While students can expect to spend much of their time in the massage lab, they will also encounter a more traditional classroom setting, where textbooks and lectures are used to teach anatomy, law and ethics, professionalism, and general massage business practices. Both types of classes (lab and lecture) are small, with a low student-to-teacher ratio for a more focused education.
There are currently three locations spread out over Tennessee. In addition to the Nashville campus, students can also opt for a Clarksville or Murfreesboro location. Because the Nashville campus is the primary one, this is where the majority of administrative offices are located.
For massage students, almost all the necessary supplies and tools are provided. The equipment is up-to-date with industry standards, and is similar to what can be found in the real working environment.
Daymar Institute is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS), granting it the ability to award certificates, diplomas, and select degrees on qualifying students. The school is also authorized as a postsecondary educational institution by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission.
Financial aid may be available to those who qualify. Although no form of financial assistance is guaranteed, loans, grants, and scholarship opportunities exist to help students pay for their education.
