Capital of Tennessee, Nashville is commonly referred to as the “Music City.” Located in the heart of this culturally diverse city, Southeastern Institute is a leader in massage therapy education and massage therapy training.

Southeastern Institute first opened its doors in 1992. It was founded by a coalition of doctors and entrepreneurs whose vision was to create highly-skilled, clinically-trained massage therapists for area health care facilities.
The school was recently sold to BAR Education, Inc., whose mission remains much the same, so the school did not see any major changes to the courses or curriculum.
All of the school’s campuses prepare students to take the National Certification exam. Students work through five main subject areas to get the best of professionalism, academics, and flexibility the school has to offer.
There is only a single Massage Therapy course offered through Southeastern Institute, although course starting times vary to offer flexibility to students. All curriculum is meant to provide students with a comprehensive education to get them prepared to work in the field. This means that in addition to the clinical skills of massage, students get training in career management development, communication, and business.
The coursework moves through a series of steps designed for beginners with no prior knowledge in the field. It begins with basic massage principles and moves through different skills and techniques. Students are also expected to pass through a core curriculum of anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, neuromuscular therapy, and clinical practices. This clinical work encompasses at least 90 hours and offers real-world training under faculty supervision.
The Nashville campus is a branch campus of the Charleston campus, and is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges. In addition, the massage therapy program is approved by the Tennessee Board of Massage.
Students who qualify may opt to use federal, state, and private financial aid. Prospective students are encouraged to fill out FAFSA forms to help them determine the amount they can expect in the form of government grants and loans. Those who need additional support may visit the school’s financial aid office to discover alternate funding sources or develop a payment plan.
The faculty members at Southeastern School of Neuromuscular and Massage Therapy are chosen for their experience as massage professionals. Their practical knowledge of the field – from working with clients to staying updated about latest techniques and certification – allows them to better serve students in creating successful careers. They are also expected to uphold educational standards in order to foster a better learning environment.
The Nashville facility features spacious classroom space and offices, and is located at 3055 Lebanon Pike. All students also have access to a shared media center and bookstore. Overall, the classrooms are modern and well-equipped, and are used for everything from class lectures to the clinical practicums. Students learn to use different types of chairs, portable massage tables, and other devices common in the massage field.
Nashville has been called “The Athens of the South” based on the large number of colleges and universities located here. Southeastern University, Remington College, Vanderbilt University, Fisk University, Tennessee State University, American Baptist College and Aquinas College are all located in Nashville, just to name a few schools. In fact, a great deal of the city’s cultural life revolves around the large college community.
As important as the music industry is to Nashville, the largest industry in the city is actually health care. . The automobile industry is growing in importance in the region with Nissan moving its North American headquarters there in 2006.
There is always something happening in Nashville. The city is the home of the Tennessee Titans of the NFL and the Nashville Predators of the NHL. There are plenty of events throughout the year including the Country Music Association Music Festival, the Tennessee State Fair, the Nashville Film Festival and the Australian Festival.
