What are the Massage Therapy Foundation Research Grants?

Massage Therapy Foundation Research Grants

As a field of study, massage therapy has much to offer the world. Even though it has been around for thousands of years, there is always more to learn about the science, art, and even the mystery of how massage benefits the body and spirit. Doctors, massage therapists with advanced degrees, and even historians have spent years studying massage at the theoretical level in an attempt to add more knowledge to the general massage curriculum.

The Massage Therapy Foundation exists to help further this kind of study. This foundation helps support scientific research, education, and community service related to the massage industry by providing funding and resources to those currently working in an advanced academic environment.

For general massage practitioners, this may not mean much, since the focus of basic massage school is more on hands-on skills development rather than theoretical research. However, if you’ve ever considered an advanced degree in massage or are interested in working behind the scenes to help discover how massage can benefit humanity in other ways, the Foundation can be a great resource.

Massage Therapy Foundation Research Grants

The research grants offered through the massage therapy foundation are earmarked to help individuals or teams advance their studies in the applications of massage and healthcare as a whole. The massage research grant is offered every year in amounts varying from $1,000 to up to $30,000. The deadline for application is March 1 of every year, and requires a fully developed proposal that supports high-quality research. (Most candidates are PhD-level researchers or the equivalent.)

Additional grants for education and community service also exist to help spread massage therapy into under-served communities that can benefit most from the health benefits of massage.

About the Massage Therapy Foundation

The Foundation has been in existence since 1990. It was originally developed by the American Massage Therapy Association as a way to bring massage into the academic and scientific spotlight. In addition to the annual research grant, it offers funding for community service, and hosts educational initiatives and conferences. It is a great resource for anyone who wants to move beyond massage as a skilled trade into more public awareness.
