How to Know if Massage Therapy School is for You?

By Lana J. Russell, RMT

As a student, one of the first questions to ask yourself is; why are you considering massage therapy as a career? Some students go to massage therapy school to get out of mundane corporate, 9 to 5 lifestyle.

Other students see massage therapy school as an investment towards the lucrative business it can generate. Some students are exploring massage therapy school because they feel it is their calling to be healers, and they have a gift to share.

Whether you are intrigued by anatomy or just willing to help others through massage, its important to know what aspect of massage therapy draws you to the field. There are a few questions to ask yourself to determine if massage therapy school is even right for you.

Am I a people-person?

Do you genuinely enjoy helping others and have a knack for going out of your way for people? Massage Therapists are in the business of making people feel better. Most massage therapists spend an hour or more with clients, sometimes on a weekly basis, which is more than most doctors do with patients.

You’re not just touching people, you are communicating with every inch of their body, emotions, and mind. It is also fundamental to your experience at Massage Therapy School, as you will be required to interact with other students.

Am I healthy enough to be a massage therapist?

While students are training in Massage Therapy School, it can be physically grueling, even though it eases you into the work. There are some long-term considerations to have when pursing a Massage Therapy career. Do you have any pre-existing conditions, such as carpal tunnel syndrome or chronic back pain? What is your lifestyle?

Do you party a lot, drink or smoke heavily and are you willing to quit to advance your studies and career? Your internal mindset is just as important as your physical health, and dedication is a big part of your success with Massage Therapy School. Though, you need to ask yourself if you are prepared to embark on career that is physically demanding?

Do I have a criminal background?

Depending on the state you live in, there may be certain regulations that specify who can register as a Massage Therapist. Not all massage therapy schools require this kind of background check, so it’s important to check what your state’s regulations are even before you enroll.

Laws vary at a state level and even local level, so get familiar with State and City Laws on registration and licenses. Be prepared that you will get fingerprinted.

Are you ready to study?

Massage therapy is a science and a medical profession. Massage Therapy school is not just a hands-on approach to technique, it is an in-depth study of human anatomy, physiology, chemistry, kinetics and energy. Things like flashcards became integrated into my daily life during Massage Therapy School.

These basic first questions will help you look forward to not only Massage Therapy School, but also your resulting career. By looking inward and asking yourself these questions you’ll know if you are ready for Massage Therapy School.
